Fritz Hansen

The story of Fritz Hansen begins in 1872, when the entrepreneurial carpenter Fritz Hansen from Nakskov receives a trading licence in Copenhagen. 1885 was a decisive year for him, in which he started his own furniture manufacturing business. Just two years later he was able to set up a flourishing workshop in Christianshavn, downtown Copenhagen. Fritz and his son Christian introduced the high level of quality that has distinguished Fritz Hansen products ever since.
The long list of renowned orders from the first fifty years of the company's history shows the reputation Fritz Hansen already had at the beginning of the 20th century. Among the buildings equipped by Fritz Hansen are Christiansborg, the University Library, the Copenhagen City Hall, the Supreme Court and other important projects.
At the beginning of the last century, Fritz Hansen's future-oriented son Christian E. Hansen began to experiment with steam bending of beech wood. By the 1930s, the technology had matured to such an extent that Fritz Hansen was one of the world's leading companies in this field, which later became his speciality. Plywood furniture.
As an adapted variant of Germanic functionalism, the clearer lines and the lighter, more practice-oriented approach helped her achieve a stylistic breakthrough in Scandinavia. Fritz Hansen launched the first Danish steel furniture and the famous church chair by Kaare Klint, which remained in the Fritz Hansen collection from 1936 to 2004.
Through considerable investments and thorough reconstruction work, the new owner Skandinavisk Holding succeeds in strengthening Fritz Hansen and equipping the old company for the future.
An exhibition consisting exclusively of new Fritz Hansen models during the Furniture EXPO 1983 in the Bella Center, a trade fair and conference center in Copenhagen, convincingly demonstrates that the old company is once again a major player and is regaining its position as Denmark's leading furniture company.
Fritz Hansen acquires the minimalist Kjærholm collection with an industrial dimension, designed by Poul Kjærholm between 1951 and 1980. Together with the purchase of the KEVI collections and Munch Møbler, this leads to increasing sales and interest in Fritz Hansen.
2015 is an eventful year, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the chair classic of the series 7™ under the motto "60 years of perfect form". Fritz Hansen also acquires the Danish lighting company Lightyears, whose design philosophy reflects that of Fritz Hansen. In addition to the acquisition of Lightyears and Kaiser Idell, the company introduces the Objects accessory collection in 2016. With the call "Complete your life", Objects is both an extension of the Fritz Hansen brand and an opportunity to invite new customers into the brand through new and more affordable items.
